Mrmr is an ongoing research project aimed at establishing a standardized set of protocols and syntax conventions for controlling live installations and multimedia performances through mobile devices. The initiative was initiated by Eric Redlinger when he served as a researcher-in-residence at the Polytechnic Institute of NYU's experimental media center.
Mrmr allows users to utilize regular cell phones and tablets as controllers in audio-visual performances, engage in interactive museum exhibits, or replace the mouse or trackpad of a full-size computer with a mobile device. Furthermore, it functions as a versatile, no-cost OSC controller for software like Max/MSP, VDMX, and other VJ/DJ platforms.
Key components of the Mrmr project include:
- Creation of personalized interfaces using solely a text editor
- Designed for multiuser interactions with support for both client peer-to-peer and client-server models
- Utilization of open standards like zeroconf/bonjour/mdns and OSC
- Dynamic interfaces that enable widgets to be reconfigured instantly
